"Okay, now," the little girl cried in her rolling China-Chinese accent, garnering as much American enthusiasm as she could muster, "throw the ball into the hoop, everybody! Com'n throw the ball into the hoop!"
Skipping a few beats, she moved to the side of the hall, where she planted her feet wide apart. Her twiggy arms were stretched above her head, holding a pink hula hoop parallel to the ground. She smiled. Peered left, peered right. She stood frozen in that stance for some whiles, watching the other children lost in sweat and giggles toss the ball to and fro, to and fro each other, not into the hoop, before she resigned and ran off to invent some other new game to play.
